Supervision of Christian Counselling Stage 1

Intro

The courses Stage 1 and 2 are the first two stages of a comprehensive training programme developed by ACC for those who wish to practice professionally as Supervisors at the highest level in the future.

Stage 1 "Supervision of Christian Counselling" is for those who have completed a certificate in Christian Counsellor training and who now wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of supervision. Course participants will begin to gain some fundamental supervision skills.

Requirements

Applicants need to have completed at least 150 hrs counselling practice and no supervision practice for this stage nor an interview is required. However, applicants require a reference from their Church/Organisation or Team Leader and need to complete the written application form.

Course Content

Course participants will learn:

  • Purpose and definition of supervision;
  • The working alliance within supervision;
  • The skills of the supervisee;
  • The skills of the supervisor.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Give an explanation for the Biblical basis for supervision;
  • Define the role, purpose and importance of supervision;
  • Outline the tasks of supervision;
  • Define the elements for establishing an effective working alliance;
  • Define the legal implications of the organisational contexts of supervision;
  • Outline the skills required by the supervisee for effective supervision;
  • Assess their own awareness in terms of beliefs, attitudes, assumptions, prejudices and motivations towards supervision;
  • Assess their own supervision skills: eg. basic and advanced communication skills, preparation, personal organisation, self-monitoring and referral.

Additional Work

12 hours contact time (of which 7 hours didactic and 5 hours practice). 3 hours for personal course journal and reading.
